Don't Shop Medicare Plans Alone This AEP: What a Free Broker Appointment Actually Covers

AEP appointments with an independent broker cost nothing and commit you to nothing. Here is exactly what happens in one, and why it beats shopping alone.

Every AEP, millions of Medicare beneficiaries try to compare plans on their own. They open three carrier websites, read conflicting marketing, and either give up or pick whatever plan showed up first in a search. There is a free alternative that most people do not fully understand: an appointment with an independent, licensed broker.

What "independent" actually means

Some insurance agents work for one company and can only sell that company's plans. An independent broker is contracted with many carriers, which means one appointment can compare every Medicare Advantage, Part D, and Medigap option available in your county. The range matters: in some Midwest counties that is a handful of plans, and in the Omaha metro it is dozens.

What happens in the appointment

  • We start with your current plan and your Annual Notice of Change letter, which lists everything your plan is raising or cutting for next year
  • We build a complete list of your prescriptions, doses, and pharmacies, then run them against every drug plan available
  • We check that your doctors, hospitals, and specialists are in network for each option
  • We add up total annual cost, not just premium: copays, deductible, drug costs, and the out-of-pocket maximum
  • You decide. A good broker presents the comparison and stops there. Nothing is signed in the first meeting, and there is no pressure to switch if your current plan still fits

How is this free?

Brokers are paid a commission by the insurance carrier when you enroll, and the commission is the same regardless of which plan you pick in a category. You never pay a fee, and your premium is identical whether you enroll through a broker or directly with the carrier. The plan does not cost more because a person helped you.

What a broker cannot do

We cannot enroll you in a plan without your permission, change your coverage outside of a valid enrollment period, or promise benefits that are not in writing. If a plan detail matters to you, ask for it in the plan documents, not in a conversation.

Common questions

  • Will a broker call me constantly afterward? Not one you would want to work with. Ask upfront how they handle follow-ups
  • Can I bring a family member? Please do. Adult children often join their parents' appointments by phone or video
  • Is there a limit to how many plans you can show me? No. Any plan you are eligible for in your area is on the table

AEP runs October 15 through December 7, and the calendar fills fastest in the first two weeks. Booking in September or early October gets you unhurried time to think before the deadline.
