How to Switch Medicare Plans During AEP Without a Coverage Gap

Switching Medicare plans is simpler than most people fear. A step-by-step walkthrough of changing coverage during Annual Enrollment so your new plan starts January 1.

November 3, 2026 4 min readBy Elie Ortiz

One reason people stay in a Medicare plan they have outgrown is the fear that switching is complicated or risky. In reality, Annual Enrollment is designed for exactly this: it is the one time each fall when most people can change Medicare Advantage or Part D coverage, with the new plan starting January 1.

Here is how a switch actually works, step by step.

Step 1: Confirm what you have now

Check your current plan card and your Annual Notice of Change. Know whether you are in Medicare Advantage, Original Medicare with a Part D drug plan, or Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement. The right switch depends on where you start.

Step 2: Compare 2027 options against your real life

Before enrolling in anything new, verify the essentials in the plan you are considering.

  • Your doctors and hospitals are in the network for 2027.
  • Your prescriptions are on the formulary, at a tier and pharmacy you can live with.
  • Your total yearly cost including premium, deductible, and expected copays, not just the premium.

Step 3: Enroll in the new plan by December 7

Here is the part that surprises people: in most cases, you do not need to cancel your old plan yourself. When you enroll in a new Medicare Advantage plan or a new Part D plan during AEP, the new enrollment automatically replaces the old one when it takes effect January 1, 2027. There is no gap, because the old coverage runs until the new coverage begins.

You can enroll through Medicare's Plan Compare tool, directly with the plan, or with help from a licensed agent. The plan must receive your request by December 7, 2026.

Step 4: Watch for your confirmation

After enrolling, you should receive confirmation and then your new plan materials and ID card before January. Keep your old card through December 31 and start using the new one January 1. If confirmation does not arrive within a couple of weeks, call the plan.

One situation that needs extra care

If you are thinking about leaving Medicare Advantage to return to Original Medicare and buy a Medicare Supplement plan, pause first. Outside of protected situations, Medigap companies can use health underwriting and can decline coverage. Get your Medigap acceptance in writing before you drop your Medicare Advantage plan.

You do not have to figure this out alone

A licensed agent can check your doctors and drugs against the 2027 plans in your area and handle the enrollment paperwork with you, at no cost to you. If you want that help before the December 7 deadline, reach out to Elie Ortiz for a free review.
