Dental, Vision, and Hearing in 2027 Medicare Advantage Plans: What to Check During AEP
Extra benefits draw attention during AEP, but the details matter. How to compare dental, vision, and hearing coverage in 2027 Medicare Advantage plans.
Dental, vision, and hearing benefits are some of the most advertised features of Medicare Advantage plans, and for good reason: Original Medicare does not cover routine dental care, eye exams for glasses, or hearing aids. During Annual Enrollment, these extras often drive plan choices.
But “dental included” can mean very different things from one plan to the next. Before you let an extra benefit tip your decision, check what is actually behind it.
Dental: preventive or comprehensive?
Many plans cover preventive dental such as cleanings and exams. Fewer cover comprehensive work like crowns, root canals, or dentures, and those that do often set an annual dollar cap.
- Ask what services are covered: preventive only, or comprehensive too?
- Ask about the annual maximum: a $1,000 cap disappears fast if you need a crown.
- Ask about the network: some plans require specific dental networks, others give you an allowance to spend with any provider.
Vision: exams, eyewear, or both?
Routine eye exams are common in Medicare Advantage plans. The bigger question is the eyewear allowance: how much the plan pays toward glasses or contacts, and how often. An allowance every two years is very different from one every year.
Hearing: exams versus hearing aids
Hearing exams are widely covered. Hearing aid coverage is where plans separate. Check the allowance amount, how often it renews, and whether you must use specific suppliers. Hearing aids are expensive, so a realistic allowance matters more than a checkbox that says “hearing covered.”
Three rules for comparing extras
- Never trade away your doctors or drug coverage for an extra benefit. Extras are the tiebreaker, not the foundation.
- Compare the dollar details, not the marketing line. “Dental coverage” and “$2,000 dental allowance with comprehensive services” are not the same product.
- Confirm the benefit in the plan's own documents for 2027, not in an advertisement.
Put the extras in their proper place
Start your AEP comparison with the essentials: your doctors, your prescriptions, your total yearly costs, and the out-of-pocket maximum. Once two or three plans pass that test, let the dental, vision, and hearing details break the tie.
