ACA Subsidies in the Midwest for 2026: Are You Leaving Money on the Table?

Enhanced premium tax credits are still in effect for 2026. Here's how they work and who qualifies in the Midwest.

The enhanced ACA premium tax credits originally passed in 2021 remain in effect through 2026, meaning more Midwest families qualify for subsidies than at any point in the law's history.

How subsidies work

Subsidies cap what you pay for a benchmark Silver plan at a percentage of your household income. Any premium above that cap is paid by the federal government directly to the insurer.

Who qualifies

Roughly anyone whose household income is above 100% of the federal poverty level and who doesn't have affordable employer coverage. The upper income limit was removed in 2021.

What to do

Estimate your 2026 household income (not your 2025 income), then get a quote. Many Midwest families paying $800+/month for individual coverage qualify for plans under $200/month.
